2006 World Cup Third Place Game Results

Today Germany played Portugal to determine third place for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Germany would love to have a third place finish to show in front of their home crowd and they did not dissappoint.

Germany took the game with the first 3 goals, and only scored on by a late goal by Portugal.

The Goal scorer for Germany were Schweinsteiger who had 2 goals, and Petit from Portugal scored on his own goal giving Germany the other goal. M. Nuno Gomes scored for Portugal in the 88th minute.

The Game finished 3-1 with the Victory to Germany, and a Third place finish for the Germans in the 2006 World Cup.

Zinedine Zidane takes France to the Finals!

In today's 2006 World Cup Semi final match, France took the challenge to play Portugal.

Only one goal decided this game and it came via a penalty kick. Zinedine Zidane, the amazing player from France, got his chance to put France up 1-0 in the game with his Penalty.

Zinedine Zidane shoots! Zinedine Zidane scores! France leads 1-0!

Portugal could not come back with a goal, and this became the game decider.

France will now face Italy in the World Cup Finals! Portugal looses and earns the right to play Germany for third place.

Italy beats Germany in dramatic fashion!

A very close match where Italy played a better first half, and Germany a better second half, but no one could find a goal.

The Azzurri came close in the opening minutes of extra time with a goal post and a crossbar making it seem like its not their night, but Germany could not deliver. Podolski had an excellent chance, but Buffon made the save.

The Italian time came to shine, when Fabio Grosso put one in the German net and gave Italy the lead. Germany desperately tried to tie and Italy put a second one in the goal, when Alessandro Del Piero scored.

The Italians now look to see who will win between France and Portugal.

Referees Poll and Ivanov not picked for next round

Fifa has made its referee selections for the next round of play.

Two referees not selected were:
Graham Poll
Valentin Ivanov

Graham Poll made a error in his first round match between Croatia and Australia. A Croatian defender was issued 3 yellow cards, while clearly the rules state two yellow cards and the player is out of the game with an immediate red card.

Valentin Ivanov was likely not chosen due setting World Cup records as he issued 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards in the game between Portugal and Netherlands.

Some will remember Luis Medina awarding a debatable penalty kick in the Italy vs Australia game. He is scheduled to officiate the Brazil vs France QuarterFinal.
