Referees Poll and Ivanov not picked for next round

Fifa has made its referee selections for the next round of play.

Two referees not selected were:
Graham Poll
Valentin Ivanov

Graham Poll made a error in his first round match between Croatia and Australia. A Croatian defender was issued 3 yellow cards, while clearly the rules state two yellow cards and the player is out of the game with an immediate red card.

Valentin Ivanov was likely not chosen due setting World Cup records as he issued 16 yellow cards and 4 red cards in the game between Portugal and Netherlands.

Some will remember Luis Medina awarding a debatable penalty kick in the Italy vs Australia game. He is scheduled to officiate the Brazil vs France QuarterFinal.

France breaks through with a victory over Spain

David Villa scored the opening goal in this match for Spain on a penalty kick. A promising start for Spain, and not so promising for France. It happening in the 28th minute though meant lots of time to continue play and for France to come back.

France did exactly that with an answer of 3 goals themself. Franck Ribery, Patrick Vieira and Zinedine Zidane all scored for France to claim the 3-1 victory!

France takes on Brazil in the Quarterfinals!

Francesco Totti saves Italy's Hopes in the World Cup

Italy was a man short since the 51st minute, where Marco Materazzi was called off for a red card. The game from their was very stale mate like, where no teams had great opportunities.

In extra time, Neill was called for fouling Fabio Grosso. Only 12 seconds was left in injury time when the call was made. Francesco Totti then put the game winner in on the penatly shot.

Italy plays next against the winner of Switzerland and Ukraine.

Podolski takes Germany into the 2006 World Cup Quarter Finals!

On two goals by Lukas Podolski, Germany is the first team to pull through the World Cup Round of 16 and make it into the Round of 16. Both goals came in the 4th and 12th minute of the game.

Germany played a well rounded game and should be a threat in the next round.

Teddy Lucic was ejected from the game in the 35th minute for receiving a red card.

Sweden had a chance to make it close and come back, but you could tell it wasnt their day when Henrik Larsson missed a penalty kick in the 53rd minute.

Heartbreak for Croatia, and Joy for the Socceroos

Croatia needed the victory and Australia needed the tie or victory.

Croatian fans had much to cheer about as early as 2 minutes in, as a free kick by Dario Srna found its way to the back of the net. From there to the rest of the half, Australia showed what their made of and fought back against Croatia having many opportunities. On a penalty kick by an unlikey Penalty kick taker, Australia's Craig Moore tied the game up at 1.

During the second half, Nico Kovac put a weak goal past the Australian keeper who I'm sure wish he had another chance at that shot. Croatia was leading 2-1 and the Australian team kept playing hard.

Harry Kewell proved his worth for Australia as he tied the game up at 2. This is what Australia needed, and the game stayed that way with an exciting finish.

Three red cards were awarded in the game. Two to Croatian players Dario Simic and Josip Simunic. Brett Emerton received a red card for the Socceroos.

Australia moves forward to play Italy in the Round of 16.

Heartbreak for Polish fans as Germany scores late

Germany wins in dramatic fashion with a late late goal in the game in the 91st minute. In extra time a beautiful cross is sent over and a great run by Oliver Neuville to score the Dramatic game winner.

Germany wins 1-0 and the chances for Poland to continue are virtually eliminated.

The Polish played better in this game, than against Ecuador but could not score. After Radoslaw Sobolewski was sent off for his Second Yellow Card meaning he gets a Red card in the 75th minute, Germany really put the pressure on.

Artur Boruc was truly amazing keeping the Polish team in this World Cup Game. They finally did figure him out, and we see the 1-0 result in favor of Germany.

Brazil wins opener against Croatia in a close match

An anticipated game by many including myself, featured one of the best teams in the World Cup 2006 Brazil against Croatia, considered a dark-force underground.

The match was expected to be dominated by Brazil, but Croatia held themselves throughout most of the game having numerous exciting chances against Brazil. Brazil scored the lone goal when Kaka striked a really nice goal into the upper left corner of the net in the 44th minute.

No more goals were scored, as both teams had more chances with Croatia coming close to tying it.

I was cheering for Croatia, and am not dissapointed at all with their showing. They played a great match against Brazil who was expected to walk all over them, and it gives hopes to many of the Croatian fans that the next games should be good ones.

England wins their Opener against Paraguay

England went in with the favor to win this match, and they won it by an own goal. Beckham on a free kick shot the ball towards the net, only for it to go off the head off Carlos Gamarra redirecting it past the goaltender of Paraguay. This all happened in the first 3 minutes of the game.

After this, both teams played with no one scoring a goal. So England wins their Fifa World Cup opener but only because of an own goal. Beckham should be credited with the nice free kick.

Poland loses to Ecuador in Opening Day Match

As many polish fans were excited to see their team prove they are better than their showing in 2002 with their World Cup Opening Match, they watched them play Ecuador. Poland played a hard 20 minutes winning every loose ball.

At 24 minutes however C. Tenorio headed a goal into the Poland net. After this goal, Ecuador's confidence was boosted and they played a very good game, seemingly frustrating Poland. Poland never gave up, but a goal in the 80th minute by A. Delgado really put down the chances of victory.

Poland kept at and hit the goal post twice! Sometimes luck is just not on your side and that could of made the difference of a tie game.
